How much does a website
really cost in South Africa?

The honest range

For a small South African business, website pricing generally falls into three bands:

• Free to a few hundred rand — do-it-yourself website builders. Real, but you do all the work, the result often looks like a template, and you're renting space on someone else's platform with their branding never far away.
• Roughly R2 000 to R10 000 — the range most small businesses actually sit in for a clean, professional site that does its job. This is the sensible middle for a service business that needs to look credible and be found.
• R15 000 and well beyond — custom design, many pages, online stores, booking systems, or agency retainers. Sometimes justified, often far more than a small business needs to start.

The trap is assuming you belong in the expensive band because that's what "a proper website" sounds like it should cost. Most don't.

Why the price varies so much

Four things move the number more than anything else:

• Size. A single, focused page costs a fraction of a ten-page site — and for most small businesses, one good page that loads fast and says the right things converts better than ten they'll never finish writing.
• Custom vs. template. Fully bespoke design costs more than a proven layout adapted to your business. The layout is rarely where customers are won or lost.
• Features. An online store, bookings, logins or payments add real cost. A site that tells people what you do and how to reach you does not.
• Who builds it. A freelancer, an agency and a self-service tool all price differently for the same-looking result — and the gap is often about overheads, not quality.

The costs nobody mentions upfront

The build price is only half the story. Before you compare quotes, know that a website also needs:

• A domain name — your web address, renewed yearly.
• Hosting — the monthly cost of keeping the site online, secure and backed up.
• Upkeep — security updates, and someone to make changes when your details, prices or hours change.

A cheap once-off build with no plan for hosting and upkeep isn't cheap — it's unfinished. And watch for the biggest red flag of all: the "contact us for a quote" wall. If a provider won't tell you roughly what a website costs until you've handed over your details and sat through a call, that's usually because the price depends on what they think you'll pay.

For businesses that later want more — a managed Google profile, an AI receptionist that answers your calls and WhatsApp, appointment booking — there are clearly priced plans, not quietly folded into your first invoice.

So what should you actually spend?

For most small service businesses in South Africa: enough for one clean, fast, mobile-friendly page paired with a properly set-up Google Business Profile — and a sensible monthly amount to keep it live. You very rarely need the expensive band to start. You need to show up, look real, and make it easy to get in touch. Start there; add more only when the business genuinely calls for it.
